Missing

A week after the awfully senile (and miraculously successful) Baaghi 2, actor Manoj Bajpayee pops up again in a film about a missing child. Of late, the famed performer seems focused on films that are totally undeserving of his talents, as though every doomed Bollywood script were a child of God and he a priestly benefactor. But while his roles in Baaghi 2 and Aiyaary were strictly supportive, Bajpayee’s character in Missing – a philandering business executive named Sushant Dubey – finds himself in the thick of a laughably slippery plot.

It is established early on what kind of a character this Dubey is a middle-aged, lecherous everyman who leers on kittenish receptionists and compliments them with lines like “Oh, Naina! The one with beautiful eyes!”The story begins with a simple set-up: Dubey is bound for a business trip to Mauritius. His wife, who has seen enough Bollywood “erotic thrillers” to know what actually happens in Mauritius, rightfully opposes his visit. Obliged to carry his family along on what seemed like a fun excursion, Dubey ends up facing unimaginable holiday horrors as his three-year-old daughter, a child named Titli, goes ‘missing’ at their nature resort.Having sat through the entirety of Mukul Abhyankar’s directorial debut, I wonder what compelled him to cast Manoj Bajpayee and Tabu in a film that looked handwritten for Zareen Khan and the latest rookie from TV.

Are pumped-up bikini bods and slow-drifting bed-sheets going out of fashion? Are audiences getting too suspicious with remade Himesh Reshammiya songs and neatly assembled Yacht docks? It’s crudely unfair – and outright stupid – to sell off an Ananth Mahadevan film with the credibility of top-shelf actors, especially if you are going to cut out the pelvic-thrusts and money shots anyway. To make matters worse, the director brings in renegade actor Annu Kapoor to play the cop in this befuddling psychological drama. Kapoor, or Inspector Buddu, arrives in the film with the air of a primetime sleuth, complete with two sidekicks named ‘Nandlal’ and ‘Ganga Narayan’. “Something is wrong somewhere,” he often repeats, as Mr. and Mrs. Dubey confound him with descriptions of their missing butterfly
