The Silent Revolution

Director Lars Kraume’s film reenacts real events from 1956 when East German students staged a protest that inadvertently brought them into conflict with their government – a conflict that had rather grave consequences. We talked to the film’s director about bringing a lesser-known period of Germany’s history to the big screen, as well as how the film was selected for a special Berlinale screening at a Berlin prison.

It’s 1956. During a visit to a cinema in West Berlin, East German high school pupils Theo and Kurt see disturbing newsreel footage of the uprising in Budapest. Back in Stalinstadt, one of the GDR’s flagship workers’ settlements, they have the idea of holding a minute’s silence in class for the victims of the Hungarian struggle for freedom.
